The book is always better than the movie, a lot of readers (even me) claim.
I feel like the Southern Reach Trilogy, by Jeff VanderMeer is different. "Annihilation," starring Natalie Portman, draws on VanderMeer's source material in a unique way, capturing the essence of "Annihilation." Without being able to portray the psychological mindscape of the book in a visual medium, the movie was better than I could have hoped. I think a carbon copy adaptation would have been disappointing.
I talked about the movie vs. the book with my cohort, Dan, in our irregularly produced podcast, The Movie Noobs. Enjoy!
